A Polarizer accepts an unpolarized input beam and converts it to either a linear- or circular-polarized output beam. Linear and Circular Polarizers are now available from ColorLink®. Both Polarizer types take advantage of polymer film dichroic materials, sandwiched between antireflection-coated glass substrates.
Dichroic materials absorb light polarized in one direction and transmit the orthogonal polarization. The most common materials used as dichroic polarizers are stretched polyvinyl alcohol sheets treated with absorbing dyes or iodine.
ColorLink Polarizers are lightweight, rugged, and thin. These Polarizers are widely viewed as the most useful polarizers available, as they are relatively insensitive to incidence angle, produce negligible beam deviation, and can be manufactured in a variety of sizes and shapes using our unique assembly process.
In general, we characterize the performance of a Linear Polarizer by its transmittance and extinction ratio. Sometimes, the optical density of a Linear Polarizer is considered, instead of its transmittance. It is important to note that a perfect Linear Polarizer transmits only 50% of an unpolarized incident beam.
